Friday Minute: The one question to ask before every hire
Missionary versus mercenary.
You need to hire missionaries.
A missionary is like the Jehovah’s Witness that walks door to door.
“This is the greatest thing since sliced bread.”
They need to believe in this thing.
A mercenary will come in, do their task and leave.
They don’t care about the war in Bolivia or wherever they’re fighting. They’re just getting a paycheck and going home.
Versus the people in Bolivia: “I’m fighting for my country. For my people.”
Now here’s what’s interesting.
I think everyone can be convinced beyond money.
The genocide happened. How many Muslims were working nice paying jobs, chasing money?
They came to us and said: “I can’t sleep at night because my job is directly causing the killing of my people.”
Money is an extrinsic motivator. It’s not intrinsic. It’s not a real inner motivation.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: money’s not on there.
Finding yourself is. That’s the highest form.
People who were chasing money are now like:
“I need to do something with impact.”
Muslims are much more mission aligned than five years ago, ten years ago.
That same person who was chasing money is now saying: I need to build something that matters.
As promised, startups in under a minute.
Hire missionaries not mercenaries. Mission outlasts money every time.

PS - OpenAI was giving 30 million dollar offers. People still didn’t leave. Because they believed in the mission.
