Back to School Health & Resource Fair, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Corvallis Junior High, 1111 NW Cleveland Ave. Services are free and include dental, hearing, and vision screenings, school and bus registration, sports physicals, kids’ vaccines, and more. AUG. 20-21 — Free Choir Camp for students in K-12. CYMC Youth Choirs is hosting a free two-day camp at First Presbyterian Church of Corvallis, 114 SW 8th St. Taught by professional music teachers including Dr. Sandra Babb from OSU. Grades K-2 will have a two-hour camp and grades 3-12 will have a four-hour camp. All are welcome. See here to register.

AUG. 20-23 — Tarweed Awakening Corvallis 2026, A Plant, A Person, A Place. A free 4-day celebration co-sponsored by 12 local organizations honoring the Tarweed plant, Sawala (a Kalapuya elder named for the plant) and Shawala Point (named for Sawala). Participants are welcome to participate in one or all of the days and on Saturday, Aug. 22, to participate at one or all five of the main-day venues.

The Tarweed Awakening events include:

• Thursday, Aug. 20: Indigenous Craft Fair, 4 – 7 p.m., Corvallis Museum, 411 SW 2nd St.

• Friday, Aug. 21: Tarweed Patch Hike, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Bald Hill Farm. An evening walk in a restored prairie on the west side of Bald Hill. Learn about Tarweed and other native plants, prairie ecology, and the importance of fire for valley ecosystems. Find more info and RSVP through Greenbelt Land Trust (link here).

• Saturday, Aug. 22: Main Event at five locations. At 1 p.m., at the Van Buren Street Bridge, David Harrelson, Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde, interprets art installations on the bridge representing first foods of the Kalapuya. From 1 – 4 p.m., the Shawala Point Park Walking Loop will have four interpretation stations featuring the future Indigenous Canoe Family Project, changes at Shawala Point, three species of Tarweed, and photos of Sawala Photos of Sawala, the “Elder of Elders”, for whom Shawala Point is named. Visit Wild Yeast Bakery/OSU Marigold Studio (corner of 2nd & B) from 1 – 3 p.m. to have your face painted for free with Tarweed images, plus the first 100 event visitors receive a free Kalapuya Blueberry Tart. From 1 to 4 p.m., Tarweed Folk School at Wade Hardware will host Joe Scott, Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, on the art of collecting Tarweed, and Dr. Molly Carney, OSU Paleoethnobotanical Archaeologist on working with Tarweed. There will also be a microscope to view Tarweed’s secrets for creating abundance. The Corvallis Museum will have an exhibit about Shawala, the Elder of Elders, from 1 – 4 p.m.

• Sunday, Aug. 23: Tarweed Path Hike, 9 - 11 a.m., Bald Hill Natural Area. Hike the east side of Bald Hill Natural Area to view a Tarweed patch. Register to receive logistics, contact Dave Eckert: deckert@willamettewatershed.com.
