Sondra Tillman · Essence Of The Vine

Summer is in full effect. The heat is dialed ALL the way up, and everyone is running toward some form of water to cool off. Beach days, rivers, lakes, swimming pools... if there’s water involved, I’m in.

The funny thing is, we all spend the entire summer chasing that mermaid vibe and mostly that effortless, sun-kissed, mermaid hair! And then every September, that same mermaid hair walks through my studio door begging to be chopped off.

Most of you who come to me know I am all about preserving the length of the hair. Cutting inches off has never been my goal. I’d much rather teach you how to prevent damage than have to repair it (or cut it) after the fact.

Let’s face it... summer has a way of making us all a little more relaxed. Our routines soften, our to-do lists become less important, and truthfully, hair is usually the very last thing on anyone’s mind. I completely understand it. Life is meant to be lived outside this time of year.

The interesting part is that we instinctively remember to protect almost everything else. We grab sunscreen before heading out the door. We pack hats, sunglasses, water bottles, snacks, towels... yet many of us have never been taught that our hair deserves that same kind of care.

Every September I hear some version of the same sentence~ “I don’t know what happened to my hair.” The answer is almost always the same.. Summer happened.

The beautiful thing is that caring for your hair during the hottest months of the year doesn’t have to feel like another thing on your to-do list. In fact, one of the simplest rituals has become one of my absolute favorites.

Below, I’m sharing the summer ritual I have practiced for years and the one thing I never leave home without once the weather starts warming up.
