Pete's Log: Goodbye Sway (For Now)

Entry #3067, (Coding, Hacking, & CS stuff, Starcraft)
(posted when I was 48 years old.)

So this worked:

  1. Install Steam. First make sure contrib is enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list, then:

    # dpkg --add-architecture i386 # apt update # apt install steam-installer mesa-vulkan-drivers libglx-mesa0:i386 mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386

  2. Download the Battle.net installer
  3. Launch Steam (first launch may take a while)
  4. Select "Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library" from the Games menu, then click "Browse" and select the Battle.net installer
  5. Go to Properties, then Compatibility, then enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and then select Proton 10
  6. Click Play (this may download a lot)
  7. Log into Battle.net, then have it download StarCraft II
  8. Play StarCraft II on Linux!

I can't believe how easy it was. Thanks to everyone making this magic happen.

For reference, I tried StarCraft II with both the radeon and amdgpu drivers. With radeon it was laggy to the point of being unplayable. With amdgpu it plays great. My 11-year-old GPU may have some life in it yet.

Anyway, since this important piece of technology is now working under Gnome, I've decided I'm going to give up on Sway for now and give Gnome a proper try. I found some quick wins that have given me most of the quality-of-life bits I was missing:

  • Settings
    • Appearance - Style: Dark
    • Keyboard - View and Customize Shortcuts - Custom Shortcuts: map super+enter to launch a terminal
  • Gnome Tweaks
    • Turn on "Resize with Secondary-Click"
    • Change Window Focus to "Focus on Hover"
  • Gnome Extensions
    • Open Bar: customize the Gnome Top Bar / Panel, including setting the font to Chicago and the color to #41FF00!
    • TopHat: add CPU, Memory, Disk usage to the Panel
    • PaperWM: add some window tiling functionality to Gnome

I'm baffled that neither Gnome Settings nor Gnome Tweaks will let me set a solid desktop background color. I can only select a background image. Still some more learning and tweaking to do, but I think we can make this work.
