Sex Healing For Gay Men: Community & Connection!

Over the last 8 weeks I led the first ever Erotic Awakening group program for gay men. A journey of sexual healing, erotic empowerment, relearning self-pleasure and having better sex. These are the 7 lessons I learned about sex healing for gay men.

You can go it alone. You can do one-to-one therapy, read the books, listen to the podcasts, work through the online courses. All of it has its place. But the most powerful part of running Erotic Awakening these last two months was something I didn’t build and didn’t see coming.

The community connection calls.

When I started, there were only a handful of calls planned. Then we had the first one. And some of us cried tears of relief at finally being witnessed, understood, seen and known at a deeper level by other men who simply got it. I hadn’t anticipated any of that. The men asked for more, so a fortnightly call became weekly. And week on week, the vulnerability and openness they brought turned out to be the most transforming part of the whole thing.

They talked about their kinks and their fantasies. One man said, “I’ve never actually said some of these things out loud. To talk about anal pleasure feels so liberating.” He’d grown up in a culture where the anus was seen as dirty, a no-go area, on top of all the shame around being gay in the first place. Speaking it aloud, in a room of men who understood, was healing in itself.

Another told us, “Because of these calls I struck up a conversation at a dinner party about sex for the first time. We’d never talked about sex before. It was so liberating, and very healing for us all.”

That is what community does. It takes the thing you’ve carried alone for years and lets you set it down in front of people who don’t flinch…

One of the men put it simply at the end:

“This programme covers pretty much everything. Anal pleasure, masturbation mastery, even boundaries and communication with sex partners. And the Zoom calls have been amazing. I’ve made some friends for life.”

We heal best in community. It takes village. Nobody does anything of any value fully alone!
