Metta is often translated as loving-kindness, and at its root is something very simple: friendliness.
Not so much politeness, not people-pleasing, and definitely not pretending everything is fine.
A friendly heart is one that learns to wish well, even when life feels difficult, even when another person is difficult, even when we ourselves feel difficult to love.
This does not mean we abandon boundaries.
We can say no, disagree, walk away, or hold someone accountable, and still choose not to feed hatred and hostility in our own hearts.
Metta is not weakness.
It is a quiet strength that helps us soften the sharp edges of resentment without denying what has happened.
The practice can begin simply.
Bring to mind someone you care for and offer a few quiet phrases: May you be happy. May you be healthy.
Then, slowly, extend the same wishes to yourself, to someone neutral, to someone challenging, and eventually to all beings.
Some days, the words may feel mechanical, and that is okay.
The heart does not always open dramatically. Sometimes it softens subtly, almost imperceptibly.
To practise metta is to remember that beneath our defences, there is still a friendly heart waiting to be uncovered.
At Take A Pause Live on Insight Timer over 11 - 12 July 2026, we practiced extending thoughts of kindness and unconditional goodwill to ourselves and others. We closed the session with a reading from the book Loving Kindness in Plain English by Bhante Gunaratana.
