Hi friends! Look at you, making it to Friday. We’re back at work this week after a lovely little break, and other than having to remove myself from my bed earlier than noon on a weekday, it’s been great to return.
It’s almost time for the treasures, but I do want to encourage you, especially if you live in Texas, to call your representatives and demand an independent investigation into the murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE agents in Houston. This murder has sickened me and is a deeply disturbing miscarriage of authority and power. I also highly recommend Jemar Tisby, PhD’s IG video on the death of Nolan Wells. This post from Danté Stewart is also so sobering. My heart is breaking for this young man’s family and the wrongness of his life being cut short. I know we like to joke around with the memes and whatever here, but these two stories have burdened me greatly, and I wanted to point you towards ways you can educate yourself and work towards rectifying these collapses of justice.
👰🏼♀️ I always really value Anne Helen Peterson’s perspective on culture, and I think she hit the nail on the head for the most part with this essay about America’s Royal Wedding from last week (Taylor, drop the pics already).
🪖 I’m in the middle of several books right now, all of which are very good, but I’m specifically listening to How to Hide an Empire by Daniel Immerwahr. It’s INCREDIBLE (randomly, I heard Daniel Radcliffe mention this book in an interview where he was asked, “what book would you press into the hands of everyone you know?”) and horrifying and fascinating. There’s a Teddy Roosevelt story in this book that made my jaw physically drop. Not finished, but already big recommend.
🔥 The Popcast hit a milestone this week: Episode 666. I joined Knox and Jamie to talk antichrists real casual, no big deal. But we had a great time until Knox probably accurately predicted the Antichrist (if that was a thing) and we all got sad.
📕 And if you’re a Shelf Respect Hardback, we recorded a super fun episode that dropped today about the books that defined our decades. What book did you get super pretentious about in your 20s? Mine was 400% Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller.
