I’ve received a letter sent after you left Rome, and from it I see that I must rot away in this calamitous situation. Don’t take this the wrong way, but if there was any new hope of my restoration, with all your love for me, you would not be leaving Rome now of all times.1 But I say nothing of this, in case I seem ungrateful or like I want everything to be ruined with me.
All I ask from you is that you try to do what you said you would, and get to wherever I am before the beginning of January.

If there was any new move to have Cicero recalled from exile, Cicero would need Atticus to advocate for him in Rome. He interprets Atticus leaving Rome (it’s unclear why or where to) as giving up on any chance of recalling Cicero.
