The bulk of “Through the Lens of Time” is focused on a mission to a planet where an ancient temple may hold the secret to eternal life. Spoilers: it doesn’t, at least not in the way Korby and Chapel want it to, but we’ll get into that in a second. What’s more striking to me, at least in terms of the direction the show is heading, is that the away team that goes on this mission is entirely made up of couples. Outside of poor, doomed Ensign Gamble, we’ve got Korby and Chapel, Uhura and Beta, and, eventually, Spock and La’an. Each one of these people has a reason for being on the mission, and their romantic relationships are previously established, so it’s not immediately apparent how odd that is. But it is odd.
“Time” worked a bit better than last week’s episode, if only because the things that happened in it were actually real; but the show is doubling down on a trend in modern Trek that frustrates the hell out of me. I understand romantic relationship…
