A clear rule seems to be emerging on Dexter: Resurrection. In the grand tradition of Tim “The Toolman” Taylor chatting up his neighbor Wilson, or Gregory House having a conversation about literally anything other than his current case or himself, it’s apparent that Blessing and his family are only here to say things about each other that double as commentary on Dexter and his son. No matter the situation: a wake for Blessing’s mother Prudence where the words “Second chances are for taking” are uttered; a casual comment from his daughter to Harrison about having plenty of time to figure out what he wants to do in life; or Blessing himself delivering a heartbreaking monologue about his mother rescuing him from becoming a child soldier back in Africa (that ends with the rule, “Never, ever let the darkness into my home,” at which point Dexter should’ve looked at the camera and winked).
