This will be our last of 7 sessions of Practice With Me, giving you a chance to play along with me on video (taken from this week’s live class).
Real practice is a focused time usual spent on our own, but doing it with others is always easier and more motivating, and doing it online means you are virtually on your own, with nobody listening to you, and yet you’re able to practice it along with someone, and even hear reminders of good things to think about and aim for. Artists often gather to draw a model or a still life together, even though nobody is collaborating on a drawing or painting. Many writers have write-ins live or onine, even though they are writing their own piece by themselves. It just feels different to know that others around you or online with you are also working on their writing. Afterwards, people may view each other’s drawings or read each other’s writings, or in our case, in the live practicing class, ask questions and discuss issues.
Having a video to play with is like working with an exercise video — you do what they do, without thinking too much, except for when you focus on what the teacher mentions as important to keep in mind or to aim for. It gives your muscles and ears a chance to work without your brain always trying to be in control.
You are welcome to use these seven videos as you like, in your own order. The video timeline for each one gives you an idea of what’s covered. You might want to play along with and watch the whole video first, and later come back and skip ahead to specific items you want to go over, using the video timeline.
I’ve been asked to offer a series like this every year, and that sounds like a good idea! Or maybe it would be good twice a year. After all, it’s helpful to all of us to have some extra motivation to focus on stretching our abilities. We often play through tunes or try to learn new ones, but without a bit of focused attention, our facility in both right and left hand can start to fade from neglect.
