Each year on 23 March, World Meteorological Day commemorates the anniversary of the Convention that established the World Meteorological Organization in 1950.

This occasion highlights the vital role of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in protecting people and supporting societal wellbeing. It is celebrated worldwide through various initiatives and events, with annual themes focusing on current and relevant weather, climate, and water-related issues.

  Now leading Partnership and User Engagement at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Deryng has over 15 years of experience across climate and agriculture policy, sustainable development and environmental advocacy. She is a Lead Author of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, contributing to the chapter on food, fibre and other ecosystem products. Her work connects climate science with food systems and policy, with a focus on resilience and long-term impact.

• GENEVIEVE PONS
  Director General of Europe Jacques Delors in Brussels, Pons has spent more than three decades shaping European policy on climate and the environment. She previously held senior roles in the European Parliament and served as Director of WWF’s European Office. She co-chairs Antarctica2030 with Pascal Lamy and was named by Politico in 2018 as one of the ‘women who shaped Brussels’. Her work focuses on advancing environmental ambition, ocean protection and Europe’s role in global climate governance.

Her work focuses on translating climate science into actionable policy for adaptation and resilience.
