Fox News just moved Texas’ U.S. Senate race from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up.” Let that sink in.

This is not a hopeful projection from a liberal outlet. It is Fox News acknowledging what the polling has made increasingly difficult to ignore: Democrat James Talarico has put Texas firmly in play.

But Talarico is not running a campaign built on wishful thinking or national hype. He is making deliberate choices designed to win the voters a Texas Democrat actually needs.

The clearest example is his campaign’s decision to hire Jacob Smith, who previously served as Republican Senator John Cornyn’s deputy legislative director. Smith will now work as Talarico’s deputy policy director.

That is more than a surprising personnel announcement. It is a statement about the kind of coalition Talarico intends to build.

Smith has spent his political career working for Republicans, but he says he is joining Talarico because the Democrat speaks to people who “work too hard for too little.” He also called out Republican nominee Ken Paxton calling him “unfit” for office.

Smith is not simply rejecting Paxton. He is offering a positive case for Talarico—and showing other Republicans and independents that there is a place for them in this campaign.

That matters enormously in Texas. Talarico cannot win by appealing only to committed Democrats. He needs independents, suburban voters and Republicans who may not agree with him on every issue but are exhausted by corruption, chaos and extremism. Hiring a respected former Cornyn aide demonstrates that Talarico understands this reality.

His message is clear: You do not have to abandon every belief you have ever held to join this coalition. Your views will have a seat at the table. In fact, Talarico is willing to build that seat and invite you to help shape Texas’ future.

That is not weakness. It is political confidence.

It also reflects a truth about voters: most people do not experience politics as a rigid ideological test. They want leaders who understand their economic pressure, respect their communities and deliver results. Talarico is betting that competence, character and common purpose can matter more than an old party label. That is a smart bet.

Too many candidates treat ideological purity as a substitute for persuasion. They run campaigns meant to earn applause from people who already agree with them, then act surprised when they fail to expand their support. Talarico is choosing a different path. He is proving that Democrats can stand for working families while welcoming people who have historically voted Republican.

This race is still far from over. A “Toss Up” rating is not a victory, and Republicans will spend heavily to protect a seat they once assumed was safe. Democrats cannot become complacent.

But the shift from “Lean Republican” is a watershed moment. It shows that Talarico’s strategy is working and that Texas voters are open to something new.

Nobody expected this race to become one of the country’s most competitive Senate contests. James Talarico made it happen by treating winning as the objective—not merely feeling good about the campaign.

Texas is officially on the map. Democrats should pay attention to how it got there.
