I was going to write a post about all the clothes I wore in France (one carry-on suitcase, two countries, three events, one fancy party, several days of touring with family) but then I began to bore even myself thinking about it and so I’ll keep it to myself. (If you care, I packed two pairs of jeans, two light jackets, a pile of dresses and a record FOUR pairs of shoes, which was one too many, my Birkenstocks could have stayed at home, and the MVP was my Apiece Apart white jacket, which I bought from Jen Mankins’s closet sale before she moved to Sweden, come back, Jen, so I can paw through your clothes some more.)
This dress is also from Apiece Apart, and was Apart (har har) of my New Summer Dress Project, wherein I sold a giant clump of clothes I no longer wear to the Real Real and used the money to buy four new summer dresses. Ok I guess I did write about what I wore in France.
ANYWAY SUMMER READING TIME.
What is summer reading? Who cares! It’s anything you read in the summer. Some people get more ambitious and some people want happy lobotomies. I am reading for my First Edition Club, which means I’m reading all the big fall books now. Have you joined my First Edition Club yet?? July— Daniel Mason, Country People
Did you read North Woods? Daniel Mason is amazing. We met at Winter Institute this year and had a lovely breakfast together, and I was reminded that male authors actually can and do ask questions. His new book is a bucolic romp!!! It is a perfect book to read while lying in a hammock somewhere.
August— Colson Whitehead, Cool Machine
I think summer is made for reading crime novels. Why is that?? I think it goes back to my Agatha Christie summers as a child. Colson Whitehead is having the most fun writing his Harlem trilogy, and you don’t need to read the first two to enjoy this one. Crime novels are like that! Start anywhere! Go backwards! There are no rules, just pleasure!
September— Emma Cline, Switzy
Ok shhhhh this one is really top secret because I picked it yesterday and I don’t even know if it’s fully confirmed by the publisher. Emma Cline can do anything. Sexy creepy beach ok? Manson? Old man with Alzheimers going to Switzerland to commit assisted suicide? The lady can WRITE. The pages fly by. It’s got humor and sadness and regret and it’s all told in this elliptical voice, a vanishing POV. Incredible.
