Staying Us in the Chaos: Connection Without Another To-Do

Hi friends,

Connection after kids often requires intention instead of spontaneity, and that realization can feel heavier than we expect.

Before kids, connection lived in the in-between.
A glance across the room.
A late-night conversation that wandered without needing a destination.
Time felt open. Energy felt renewable.

After kids, those moments don’t vanish, but they stop arriving on their own.

I remember the moment it finally clicked. I was sitting there, convinced something was wrong because the connection no longer felt effortless. Because it needed planning. Protecting. Choosing. I mistook the absence of spontaneity for the absence of love.

But love wasn’t gone.
It hadn’t failed or faded.
It was simply waiting for the space we hadn’t learned how to make yet.

Space from noise.
Space from logistics.
Space from the constant pull of responsibility.

What changed wasn’t the love—it was the conditions around it.

Once I stopped measuring connection by how easily it appeared and started measuring it by how intentionally I returned to it, everything softened. Five minutes mattered. Sitting side by side without phones counted. Even choosing rest together became its own quiet kind of intimacy.

Sometimes that space looked like sitting on the edge of the bed before sleep, phones down, asking one honest question: How are you really doing? No fixing. No solutions. Just presence at the end of a long day.

Other times, it looked like choosing the same couch cushion instead of separate rooms. No deep conversation. Just shared silence. A shoulder leaning into another. Letting that be enough.

These moments didn’t look romantic the way they used to.
But they were connective.
And over time, they taught me something important:

Connection after kids doesn’t need to look like it once did.
It just needs permission to look different.

Connection after kids isn’t about recreating the past.
It’s about noticing where love is still waiting—right now.

Excerpt from the book:

“Connection isn’t built by grand gestures. It’s built by small moments done consistently.”

This book helps couples create closeness that fits into real life—not ideal life.

Reflective question: What small moment of connection feels most realistic for you right now?
