Everyone says they have a passion project. Here's what separates the ones that actually work.

Passion is cheap. Proof is priceless.

A few years back, a student came to us with what sounded like a strong profile.

  • He’d started a nonprofit/passion project focused on meditation access.

  • He’d written some blog posts and even a children’s book on the subject

  • He even had a podcast on mental wellness where he interviewed a few professors

The challenge?

  • He had average stats… and virtually no state or national awards 😓

Yikes. Honestly? When I first saw the file, I wasn’t sure he’d get in… anywhere.

But when December rolled around, he got into Dartmouth ED.

How? Why? Well, because everything he built had receipts:

  1. The nonprofit had raised $7,160 through actual book sales on Amazon. Indeed, his meditation book had sold 221 copies. His children’s book, 94.

  2. His karate students he’d personally coached completed a five-week mindfulness unit he designed himself– something his sensei backed up in his rec letter.

  3. And he’d done a summer research internship at a mental health nonprofit, leading a real meta-analysis study. Sure, it wasn’t professional caliber research, but his work was published front and center on their website (still counts!)

The reason he got in was because everything pointed to the same themes: mindfulness, education and advocacy.

These numbers are what we call “Stamps of Legitimacy.”

But metrics aren’t the only way to convey success.

When someone outside your school, outside your family, outside your own resume says: yes, this is real – you’re solid!

This could be a professor, a press mention, or a real organization vouching for you.

Alternatively, this can be a book that’s actually sold units, or an app with 1000+ downloads on the App Store (not something you just vibe-coded in 5 minutes with Claude).

Speaking of which, these days the barrier to starting a passion project is so low that everyone has one.

An admissions officer reading your file has seen 45 nonprofits, 62 podcasts, and 103 “apps” that were built but never genuinely impacted someone.

Look, you don’t need to go viral. You just need a few external data points that say your work exists in the real world, not just on your Common App 🤓

This concept is so important, it’s actually featured in our Secret Admissions Rubric–

OK you got me, not so secret. It’s completely free!

Until next time,

P.S. The easiest stamps to get are also the most overlooked. Local news channels love student stories; truly, one email to the right org can turn a solo project into a real partnership. Here’s an example from one of my old students from a few years back.

The first yes is the hardest. After that, it compounds 💪

Know a junior or senior who needs to hear this? Forward this email — it’s free, and it might change how they approach the next six months!
