The Ulmener Maar is a unique site in the Eifel region for several reasons. Nestled near the picturesque town center and overshadowed by castle ruins, it is perfect for short walks and hikes. A “maar” is a Moselle Franconian term for a volcanic crater lake.

One distinct feature of the area is the Ulmener-Maar-Stollen, a tunnel that connects the Ulmener Maar to the Jungfernweiher. The Jungfernweiher is a silted-up maar that now serves as a bird sanctuary. In addition to being suitable for leisurely walks and jogging, the Jungfernweiher is also an excellent location for wildlife exploration.

You can easily incorporate this area as a destination for a longer hiking tour, starting from the nearby Endert Valley, or as a stop on any biking route, whether it’s mountain biking, touring, or road biking.
