Well, damn.
I logged into Substack to write a brand-spanking-new newsletter, thinking that I’d neglected this thing for a few months…only to realize that it’s been 20 whole months since my last post.
While I’m making no promises, the hope is to be more frequent going forward — largely because I’ve been pulling back from social media this past year. Facebook is useless, Twitter is a shit-show, Instagram is for pictures, and Bluesky is fine, but it doesn’t seem to be as active as I’d hoped. In addition to social media, I’ve pulled back from con appearances (not fully, just cut down). I’m becoming a digital/real-life hermit.
I’m hoping that resurrecting this much-neglected newsletter will let me keep in touch with you fine folks. I won’t be sending updates weekly, but am going to make a concerted effort to shoot out a newsletter when I have something new on the shelf.

Thundercats: Panthro #1!

Growing up, Panthro was my dude. Far and away my favourite Thundercat and one I’ve been clamouring to write. I was lucky enough to work with Dave Acosta, who absolutely killed it on this issue.
This story was a ton of fun to write. We’ve got monsters, interdimensional prisons, magic, and a fan favourite OG Thundercats character finally making his comics debut.

As an aside, when I was about nine, I started a super-legit detective agency at my elementary school. My first (and only) client was a kid whose Panthro action figure was stolen from his desk. During my investigation, I was approached by other kids who’d also had toys stolen. I managed to crack the case by taking the first letter of each stolen toy and rearranging them to reveal that they spelled the name of one of my classmates. I tried to confront the culprit, but he did a runner. While chasing him, I tripped and sliced open my wrist badly — I still have a scar from it, ask me if you see me at a convention and I’ll show you. Because of the chase and blood, the suspect and I had our asses dragged into the principal’s office to explain what the hell was going on. Despite this rock-solid evidence, the principal wasn’t convinced by my case and the kid was never punished.
Still…I KNOW WHAT YOU DID, PHIL!

Since I last posted, I’ve picked up a camera and have thrown myself fully into photography. Initially, it was an excuse to get myself out from behind the computer and into the world. I get anxious when I’m cooped up all the time and need excuses to get out and do shit. Photography forces me to slow down, to pay attention to things around me. It forces me to just chill the fuck out for a minute, which is something I have trouble doing.
For the first six months or so, I kept it secret. I had intended to keep it completely separate from my work life, something that was just for me. But, the more I learned and the better I got at it, the more I found I enjoyed sharing my work. So much so, that last August, after a full year of photography, I released a photozine collecting my favourite photos from those first 12 months. The zine, Shoot First Question Later: Year One, is available from my shop, if you’re so inclined. (Yes, I called my first book Year One. Sue me.)
