Thirty-five years ago, my oldest son came home during first grade and asked if he could be taught at home. Our son who was reading by the age of 5 was in a classroom where some of the kids could not identify shapes and colors.
Beginning with his second grade year, we became a homeschooling family. At that time, we lived in West Virginia. If we lived in North Carolina, as we came to do a few years later, we could have been prosecuted because homeschooling was illegal.
Today, it is a choice that many families make for a host of reasons.
