Earth in Brackets · Unbracketing the possible

1.

Cop is what we are here for!

COP = Columbian Pesos $ (1 US Dollar = 4,242 COPs)

COP = Police officer (2-20 of which at every street corner in Cali)

COP = Conference of the parties (something about nature or so)

Human nature

It was in the restroom at the convention center where I realized that cop is a funny place. More precisely when I entered the smelly restroom and was confronted with an overwhelmingly full room. All urinals were taken except one. So I headed over there only to notice that it was the minister of environment of a powerful country (whose name i won’t disclose) who was peeing to the left of me.* To the right of me, a policeman. “Hmm”, I was thinking “we aren’t too different from one another after all; here in this smelly restroom; all having to urgently pee.”

It was not much later when my theory of similarities was proven right again. It was after the official part of the ceremony. No one would have anticipated it (otherwise they would have left the meeting early) but they started to serve free drinks. Any manners of the delegates disappeared and ngo-representatives like presidents started running towards the bar pushing each other out of the way (maybe a little bit exaggerated, but running was involved). Arriving at the bar the same bar rules applied as anywhere else. The bar-smart person who managed to get the eye contact of the bar-keeper won and the person who stood in line is still standing there. As the evening continued snacks were brought out and delegates were just filling their mouths, hands and pockets with shrimp crackers and empanadas. I even witnessed a UN-policeman slip a cocktail into his jacket. All scenes which could have just taken place some hundreds miles north of Cali at a small college named COA during some presidential inauguration.
