Hey everyone!
Welcome to another combined release window, and boy is it packed. I chose to squeeze May and June together because we desperately needed to clear the decks for June’s Steam Next Fest, which I anticipate will bring an avalanche of game demos. May was unbelievably busy for me work-wise, so I did not get to play as many demos as my soul required. But I kept my eyes glued to the horizon that is our Substack community as well as some of the major games media outlets for news on the upcoming (well, they are out now) heavy hitters like 007 First Light, Forza 6, Subnautica 2, and Paralives.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s unpack the weird, wild news of the last few weeks.
Mixtape was a fascinating case study for games and the purpose of game reviews. As a game, Mixtape was a massive indie hit, but boy, did it divide the room. The game managed to cause a tense debate over pure narrative-driven games versus games driven by player agency. As journalist Ádám Bráder recently pointed out, the game essentially "plays itself" with straightforward mini-games over its short three-hour runtime. While it boasts an incredibly expensive licensed soundtrack library that makes it a cozy, atmospheric gateway game for nontraditional gamers, the real controversy came from mainstream media outlets unanimously handing it unprecedented 10/10 scores. That immediately caused the gaming community to push back and aggressively hunt for flaws, creating some distrust. If you want a fantastic breakdown of the cultural noise surrounding it, Ádám wrote an excellent piece over at the Hungarian Conservative that beautifully summarizes the whole controversy.
In other news, I recently grabbed Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Human Revolution just to scratch a specific cyberpunk itch. While researching the Deus Ex universe, I went down a rabbit hole and stumbled onto the heartbreaking realization that Deus Ex Remastered had been delayed indefinitely. To further complicate matters, refunds for pre-orders had been issued the same day the delay was announced. In my mind, it happened so silently that I completely missed it, but that’s probably because my attention was completely hijacked by the February Steam Next Fest event, the announcement of Styx: Blades of Greed, and The Thief: The Dark Project Remastered news all in one month. Despite being upset by this, I can understand the reason for the delay, the studio tasked with the remaster has a history of disappointment with their remastered titles, and the release trailer exposed this.
To save our collective sanity before Steam Next Fest, I’m going to keep my thoughts on the SGF reveals brief and focused on my favorite picks. In my opinion these titles stood out:
Story: Claire Redfield travels to France three months after the Raccoon City disaster to find her brother Chris Redfield, but is captured by Umbrella forces and transported to Rockfort Island, a mysterious prison facility where a T-virus outbreak has occurred. She teams up with fellow inmate Steve Burnside to escape while confronting the island’s commander Alfred Ashford and uncovering the mystery of Alexia Ashford and the T-Veronica virus.
Gameplay: This is a complete remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica from 2000, preserving the essence of the original while introducing modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics for modern survival horror . Players navigate the living hellscape of Rockfort Island with updated mechanics and visuals.
Resident Evil Veronica opened Summer Game Fest 2026 and emerged as one of the two biggest talking points following the show, with fans expressing massive hype and happiness about the remake announcement.

Gameplay: This is an immersive open-world action-RPG where you customize your Hero’s appearance and wield powerful weapons weaving melee, ranged, and magical combat . You can take on bandits, beasts, Hobbes, Balverines, and Trolls while building reputation that affects relationships with villagers and shapes the world around you . Beyond combat, you can get rich as a landlord or blacksmith, romance villagers, have kids, and watch your reputation precede you .
Fable was one of the major franchise trailer reveals from Summer Game Fest 2026. A lot of excitement has built up around Playground Games rebooting this beloved franchise.

Story: God of War Laufey shifts action from Kratos and Atreus to Faye (Laufey), Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. She awakens in the Everywhen, a cross-culture afterlife of gods where deities collide. Something strange happened upon her death, and she’s confused about where she is while Kratos and Atreus enact the plan she set in motion. She’s quickly captured by two intimidating masked figures but breaks free with a talking ribbon attached to a sword.
Gameplay: Faye fights through the Everywhen with combat styles making use of speed and dexterity. She zips around performing aerial combos with a special magical sword, offering a refreshing change of pace from the meaty-feeling series. Like previous God of War games, combat is the focus but Faye also explores areas while thrust into a strange new conflict.
Announced during a lengthy 20-minute reveal at PlayStation’s State of Play in June 2026, fans are building excitement around building on the overall narrative and playing as Faye. The game is currently in development for PlayStation 5.

Story: The game features Ro Laren from Star Trek: The Next Generation, last seen aboard the Enterprise, voiced once more by Michelle Forbes. After picking up a distress signal from an uncharted planet, Ro’s ship crashes on what’s actually a giant spaceship graveyard, and she must search for a way home while exploring the planet’s corrupted surface. She resists a hostile entity seeking to envelop her body and mind, dealing with skeletons in her closet and exploring consequences of past decisions.
Gameplay: This is a sci-fi psychological thriller focusing on story-driven action adventure where players explore a hostile environment, encounter other space travelers who survived crashing, and face twisted violent creatures. Gameplay revolves around navigating hazardous landscapes, dealing with environmental threats eroding sanity, using classic Trek gear like phaser and tricorder to scan items and fight or solve puzzles. Exploration is both necessary and detrimental as venturing into dangerous territory leads to mental degradation.
Star Trek: Shadow Frontier was announced with its first trailer at IGN Live Showcase 2026 during Summer Game Fest, exploring Trek’s darker side with Ro Laren as the focus. The game delves deep into Ro’s personal conflicts, bringing darkness to the franchise.

Story: The story follows Dylan Faden, a supernaturally abled “parautilitarian” and Jesse Faden’s estranged brother, who battles hostile entities while searching for Jesse. Dylan awakens from prolonged slumber to discover The Hiss has ravaged the Oldest House, and he’s released from captivity by the Federal Bureau of Control to assist in containing an escaped extradimensional entity controlling downtown Manhattan.
Gameplay: Unlike the first game’s third-person shooter, Resonant is an action role-playing game emphasizing melee combat. Dylan’s primary weapon the “Aberrant” is a rod pierced through his chest that shapeshifts into various armaments including massive scythes. The newly corrupted New York serves as excellent platforming environment with Remedy capturing Dylan’s movement flow.
Control Resonant’s hack-and-slash pivot is considered a cool concept, though some reviewers aren’t fully sold yet after playing an early demo at Summer Game Fest. The fresh lead character and shape-shifting weapon generate interest despite the combat style change.

Story: Guild Wars 3 is ArenaNet’s radically different MMO following Guild Wars 2, planned as an action-adventure MMORPG.
Gameplay: Combat is designed for both gamepad and keyboard/mouse, featuring a one-of-a-kind movement system transferring momentum between gliding, riding, jumping, and wall-running. Players seamlessly transition between movement modes harnessing speed for bigger damage and impact when fighting foes. Combat involves strategic skill use, positioning, and movement where action RPG combat meets Guild Wars build-making.
Guild Wars 3 emerged as a major announcement from Summer Game Fest 2026, with fans noting it’s going well above and beyond Guild Wars 2 by factoring mounts into combat. Many are excited about diverting from hotbar mashing MMO combat style.

Story: Created by Patrice Désilets, co-creator of Assassin’s Creed, 1666 Amsterdam is a narrative mystery game that spent over a decade in development. The game introduces the world, characters, and mystery across different time periods including a 1999 section.
Gameplay: The demo features walking, much dialogue, and visually stunning cutscenes but no combat encounters in 30 minutes of gameplay. The core gameplay loop includes investigation, tracking, and confronting the Originals during the Esbat in the full game. Unfortunately there isn’t much gameplay variety in the demo, and player input matters very little especially in the 1999 section.
The demo didn’t offer much gameplay variety as this was just a prologue. Fans of narrative games are intrigued but will have to wait for the full game to see the core gameplay.
