Is there any better feeling than finally seeing that “Perfect Games” list grow while your “To Play” category actually hits zero? If you’ve managed to clear your backlog recently, I salute you! You’re a stronger person than I am. But, because the universe abhors a vacuum, I’m here to help you fill that empty hard drive space with the absolute best (and a few of the “worst”) from a very busy March and April.

From rodent detectives to high-budget sci-fi that actually lived up to the hype, let’s get into it.

  • Pragmata: A surrealist sci-fi wonder that is officially a certified hit; it’s tactical, haunting, and deeply weird in the best way possible.

  • Windrose: This pirate adventure is crunchy and expansive, proving that early access can still deliver a polished, seafaring dream.

  • Mouse P.I. For Hire: A stylized, noir-inspired detective game that feels like a playable cartoon, even if the mechanics are a bit “stitched together.”

  • Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered: A brutal, atmospheric trip down memory lane that remains the gold standard for gothic storytelling.

  • Crimson Desert: Despite the pre-launch jitters, this is a visceral and sweeping epic that actually sticks the landing.

It’s been a wild ride these last 60 days. Between juggling demo installs and managing my (temporarily!) empty storage, a few things really stood out.

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure if Pragmata was ever actually going to come out. But it didn’t just release; it exploded. Pragmata topped 2 million sales in just 16 days, and after spending time with the demo, I totally get why. It inspired a whole new segment for this Substack because it proved that a great demo is the ultimate way to show gamers what they’re paying for.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for Legacy of Kain fans. The Defiance Remaster is a love letter to the original—it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, it just gets out of the way and lets the gothic atmosphere shine. Even with its original flaws, it’s a solid play.

On the flip side, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance has been a heartbreak. It’s sitting with overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam, with players calling it a lackluster disaster. We deserved better.

Marathon had a massive launch, but the honeymoon phase ended quickly. Reports indicate Sony is facing a $76.5 million impairment loss due to the studio’s underperformance. Meanwhile, the indie scene is thriving—the pirate-themed Windrose sailed past 1.5 million copies in April. It just goes to show that the “Dusty Gamer” picks are often where the real staying power is.

I have a soft spot for this one. Some reviewers gave it a stellar “Rodent Noir” review, while others felt the ideas weren’t fully developed. My take? If you love the aesthetic, you’ll forgive the jank.

March was a month of high-stakes tension and nostalgic revivals. We saw a heavy lean toward Action-Adventure and Remastered Classics, dominated by the return of the Legacy of Kain series and the long-awaited (and polarizing) launch of Marathon. It felt like a month where everyone was trying to recapture lightning in a bottle, with varying degrees of success.

April, by contrast, was the month of the Indie Breakout. The vibes shifted toward Tactical Simulations and Atmospheric Explorers. While the big hitters like Pragmata finally showed their teeth, April really belonged to the “small but mighty” titles, pirate adventures and quirky noir mysteries that proved you don’t need a AAA budget to capture the internet’s imagination.

The Worldsoul Vanguard

The second installment of the three-expansion Worldsoul Saga represents a massive pivot toward localized, high-stakes narrative arcs within the elven ancestral lands of Quel’Thalas.
