There is a point in every fall camp when the conversation has to move beyond what everybody says the team wants to become.

The first few practices are filled with energy. Everybody is healthy enough to be excited, the newcomers are finally doing football again, the veterans have spent months waiting to get back onto the field and almost every interview is filled with some variation of excitement about the season ahead. By the second week, some of that novelty begins wearing off. Bodies hurt. Meetings accumulate. Players make mistakes they thought they had already corrected. Competition stops feeling theoretical because coaches begin getting closer to deciding who will actually play.

Dan Lanning acknowledged that shift after Oregon’s sixth practice when he said fatigue was beginning to set in during the Ducks’ second consecutive day of work. What pleased him was not that Oregon somehow avoided the fatigue, but that the team finished practice well and continued competing through it. When asked what he enjoys about this point in camp, Lanning talked about watching someone make a mistake one day and correct it the next, or seeing a player fight his way through a taxing practice and push a little harder than he did before.

That sounds mundane compared with discussing touchdowns, sacks or who is running with the first team, but I think it gets closer to what Oregon is actually trying to discover right now.

The Ducks entered camp talking repeatedly about being more player-led. Two weeks in, we are beginning to see what that actually means when players are tired enough that leadership has to become something more useful than a Media Day talking point.
