Sometimes something catches your eye. A flash. A glimmer. Sometimes it’s something you’ve never seen. Sometimes it’s something you’ve passed a thousand times but never really noticed. Maybe it’s a word. A question. A sentence. A color. A texture. A medium you’ve never considered. A task entirely unrelated to everything you’ve been doing. You find a hidden thread in the world, and you start pulling.
It happens to every person at some point. This unexpected shimmering of curiosity. But to the maker it is an essentiality.
It’s easy to be dismissive. To not take it seriously. To tell yourself it’s unproductive. To call it a distraction. To label it as unnecessary. To self-flagellate for procrastinating, when you feel your effort and attention should be elsewhere. That it’s not what you should be doing.
The threads we find and pull when we wander often lead to nowhere. They often produce nothing. No product or tangible substance. No proof that exertion was worth it. No evidence that our time was well used.
Our sauntering wonder may be aimless. No fixed point on the horizon. No charted trajectory. No clear or distinguished geography. But it is not without direction. Its purpose is sure, even if unnamed.
Curiosity has no need for justification. It has no use for promises of return. It subverts all the mechanisms of exchange and economy. It is a gift given freely without condition. Arising unexpectedly. The way that light dances through a window. The way that rain gathers in droplets of resplendence on concrete. A love letter from the world that asks for nothing other than to be read, noticed, and seen.
It cannot be explained, and there is no use in trying. It leaves no visible mark or impression when it happens, when it passes, or when it leaves. But each moment that we let it happen accumulates into a life worth living.
May you find the threads worth pulling.
May you follow them without apology.
May your wandering always lead you to exactly what you need.
In case no one’s told you today, I love you with all my everything.
