Introduction
Love can be one of the most meaningful parts of being human. It can also be one of the most activating. Most of us assume that if relationships feel hard, we’re communicating poorly, loving incorrectly, asking for too much, or somehow failing at intimacy. But what if that’s not the whole story? What if some of what you’ve been calling anxiety…is actually vigilance? What if what you’ve been calling “being too much”… is a nervous system that’s been carrying too much for too long? What if exhaustion in relationships isn’t always about the relationship itself… but about the invisible emotional work your body has been doing to keep connection feeling safe?
This week’s essay explored the two invisible jobs of a lasting partnership: becoming students of each other’s evolution and guardians of each other’s deepest character. This companion guide asks a different question: What happens when your nervous system is too busy bracing to do either?
Inside you’ll find reflections to help you recognize where love has started feeling like work, where your body may still be carrying old protection, and how curiosity, for yourself and the people you love, can begin to return.
Move slowly. Let your body respond, not just your mind.
Where Love Feels like Effort
Circle what resonates. In love or close connection, I often:
☐ Monitor other people’s moods
☐ Adjust my tone to prevent reactions
☐ Feel responsible for keeping things emotionally steady
