  1. Carbon Footprints of Rice

I tip my hat to those that can program in Excel.

The newly developed tool for calculating Carbon Footprints of Rice (CF-Rice) aims at streamlining information exchange on carbon footprints of rice products among research, policy makers, food industry and consumers. In contrast to commercially available C-Footprint calculators, CF-Rice is freely accessible and incorporates a set of calculation routines and technological default values tailored for the rice value chain. Moreover, the tool facilitates the use of own data, e.g. new Emission Factors at field level or for advanced technologies.

  2. An inter-laboratory comparison of soil organic carbon analysis on a farm with four agricultural management systems

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important measure of soil health, which helps soil support plants, animals, and people. Knowing how much SOC is in the soil helps farmers and policymakers make decisions about farming practices and can even determine financial rewards through programs such as carbon credits. This study looked at SOC levels on a farm with four different regenerative farming systems. Soil samples were carefully collected and divided into groups to account for differences in the landscape. These samples were then tested at four different laboratories using a common method called dry combustion. However, the results showed surprising differences: the SOC levels reported by different labs varied just as much as the differences between the farming systems being studied. This means that labs and their testing procedures can greatly affect results. To ensure consistent and accurate SOC measurements over time, it's important to use the same lab and testing methods.

  3. Economists say unbiased data is essential for policymaking, and for democracy.

Mr. Trump said he fired Dr. McEntarfer because the numbers produced by her agency were “rigged” to hurt him politically.

Experts on the government statistics, including former commissioners in both Democratic and Republican administrations, have called foul on that accusation. The commissioner, who is the bureau’s sole political appointee, does not control the numbers that the agency publishes, or even see them until they have been finalized by a staff of career technocrats whose careers typically span multiple presidential administrations.

  4. Science Is Winning the Tour de France

    One takeaway:

The nutrition is significantly different. Riders are fueling way more and in different ways from what they did in the past.
