NEW EPISODE - The Drum Panel: Are we just musical sperm donors?

New episode of Drummers on Drumming is out now.

This week, we’re back with another installment of The Drum Panel. Eric Urrea joins me as always, and Zack Albetta is back on the show. Zack plays with the touring Broadway production of & Juliet and also hosts The Working Drummer podcast, so he brings a really sharp and grounded perspective to these conversations.

For this one, I went back through some old Instagram hot takes that people had submitted to the Big Fat Snare Drum IG account. A few of them were still sitting there, untouched, and they felt perfect for the panel.

We get into a bunch of stuff around social media drumming, what actually makes someone “good,” whether technique is as important as people say it is, and the weird line between being a drummer for other drummers versus being a drummer in the actual music business.

The second half of the episode turns into a bigger conversation about modern live shows.

Clicks, tracks, consistency, polish, technology, feel, risk, humanity, all of it.

As usual, we don’t really land on one perfect answer. That’s kind of the point.

Sometimes we agree. Sometimes we don’t.

Sometimes we start with Instagram drummers and somehow end up talking about whether live rock has been optimized to death.

You know. Normal stuff.
