Why I Created Dear Migrants

Dear Migrants,

For the past decade, many of you have known me for helping students win scholarships and study abroad. (In fact, four of my students were recently awarded the MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship and will be moving to Japan in 2027. I’m incredibly proud of them—please join me in congratulating them!)

But over the last few years, something started bothering me.

The questions people were asking me had changed.

They were no longer just about scholarships.

They sounded more like this:

“Where can engineers build a long-term career?”

“Which countries are hiring foreign nurses?”

“Should I choose Germany or Japan?”

“Will Canada’s immigration changes affect me?”

That’s when I realised something.

Scholarships are only one small part of a much bigger journey.

My PhD research focused on migration and diasporas.

Today, I teach migration at the university.

Every week, my work takes me through migration policies, labour markets, demographic change, and the global competition for talent.

The more I learned, the more I felt that this knowledge shouldn’t stay inside academic papers or university classrooms.

It should help people make better decisions.

That’s why I created Dear Migrants.

Every Friday, I’ll send you one migration insight that I think is worth understanding.

Not endless immigration news.

Not clickbait.

Just one idea that helps you make a smarter migration decision.
