If you’re neurodivergent, you know the moment: one minute you’re fine, the next your brain goes flat. This is lose of short-term energythe fast-access fuel your neurons need when you’re processing sensory input, switching tasks, or masking in social situations.
I don’t use “fix.” I use “buffer.” Creatine acts like a small, fast power bank for cells. I tried this protocol myself, and I’m using it with my clients: the change is subtle but real later afternoon energy instead of a total crash, quicker recovery after overwhelm, and a little more clarity for demanding mental tasks.
Most people assume creatine only helps muscles. That’s true for quantity most creatine is in muscle but the brain is an large energy source. When neurons fire quickly, they use ATP; phosphocreatine helps recycle that ATP so neurons can keep working.
In other words: creatine helps the brain refill its short-term energy supply during high-demand moments.
Cognitive endurance: Multiple human trials report that creatine reduces mental fatigue and can improve short-term memory and processing speed, particularly under stress or sleep loss (Rae et al., 2003; Avgerinos et al., 2018).
Mood: Randomized studies testing creatine (commonly 3–5 g/day) as an adjunct to antidepressants have found faster or stronger responses in some people, with several studies reporting clearer effects in women (Kious et al., 2019; Roitman et al., 2007).
Diet matters: People who eat little to no meat (vegetarians, vegans) often show larger cognitive benefits from supplementation likely because their baseline creatine levels are lower (Rae et al., 2003; Benton & Donohoe, 2011).
The Fine Print: There are not yet large, definitive trials in ADHD or autistic adults specifically. Much of the argument for neurodivergent benefit is mechanistic plus extrapolation from related studies.
The research tells one part of the story, but those of us living it know the rest. There are two big reasons I believe creatine is such a heavy hitter for us specifically.
First, there’s the physiological baseline. As women, we generally have lower natural creatine stores than men partly due to having less muscle mass and partly due to how our hormones fluctuate.
When our baseline is lower, a small amount of support often makes a much louder impact.
But more importantly, I look at the metabolic tax we pay just to exist in a world that isn’t built for us.
Think about what our brains are doing every hour: we are filtering out that hum of the refrigerator, manually processing social cues that others do on autopilot, and task-switching a dozen times before lunch.
Every time our neurons fire to filter a sound or “mask” a trait, they burn fuel (ATP). Most people’s “power banks” refill fast enough to keep up.
But for us, the demand is so high and so constant that we hit the wall faster.
I think of creatine as a “capacity buffer” for us. It doesn’t change our neurotype or “fix” how our brains work and we don’t want it to. Instead, it helps refill that short-term energy supply in real-time. When we have that buffer, the sensory filtering and the task-switching don’t drain us quite as deep. Practically, this is why I (and so many of my clients) notice that the “afternoon crash” happens later, and the recovery time after a social event or a sensory-heavy day feels more manageable.
One of my clients, a 31-year-old autistic writer and mother, described her usual rhythm as “high until noon, then a wall.” After four weeks on 2.5 g/day, she reported that her “wall” moved to 3:30 PM, and she was able to finish dinner prep without needing to lie down afterward. She added, “It’s tiny but it’s the first thing that’s ever buffered my energy instead of just managing my time.”
If you want to try it, I recommend a gentler start to avoid any initial bloating:
Take 2.5 grams a day for one month. If it is tolerated well, you can increase to 5 grams.
Form: Creatine monohydrate is the most researched and inexpensive form.
Timing: Brain levels rise over weeks, so give it at least 4 weeks to judge the effect.
Safety: If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or take drugs affecting renal function, check with your clinician first.
Creatine provides a metabolic buffer, but it’s hardest-working when paired with basic supports:
Sleep: It helps blunt the effects of sleep loss, but isn’t a substitute.
Nutrition: Take your dose with a meal or a carbohydrate to support absorption.
Pacing: Use the extra capacity for smarter pacing, not more grinding. Take breaks before you’re exhausted.
Meds & Therapy: It provides the energetic floor so your existing tools can work better.
What we do want is more usable energy so daily life feels more manageable and that’s exactly what small, practical interventions are for.
I work this way because tiny, repeatable shifts add up. Move your afternoon “wall” back by 30 minutes and suddenly you can finish dinner without collapsing. Cut recovery after a sensory day from three hours to one and you get two extra hours in your life. Those are real wins.
Creatine is a tool to help us rebuild that energetic floor. It doesn’t erase the hard parts of the day, but it can make them less exhausting giving us space to practice skills, hold routines, and feel a little more present.
