Writing is not a cure for insomnia but it does render it useful. My best work comes in the post midnight dark. It nearly always comes as a gift, after I’ve given up trying to be clever or profound.
There is no knowing where the gifted words come from, except that it is somewhere within. I don’t do AI, not even for research. Artificial Intelligence is not intelligent. It is artificial imitation, it doesn’t give you back anything it hasn’t stolen from a living mind.
To my mind, literature is by definition a human product, distilled from dreams and visions and intuitions. Reason and logic are all right as far as they go, but you can’t reason a story into life or calculate its meaning for every reader it engages.
A story has its own life and flow. It knew the writer before there was ever a word of it on paper or screen. It remakes itself every time it is told. The Machine delivers back to us our own manipulated and distorted image. Story liberates us from self-definition.
