One morning last week, I slipped away to Drovers Gap and shared breakfast with a friend at Wardlow’s Lunch. Yes, as some of you know, Drovers Gap and Wardlow’s are made-up places located in a story I wrote ten years ago, but made-up places can be real enough when you least expect it.
The friend is real. He knows some things about me that most of my acquaintance would rather not. In spite of that, he is not ashamed to be seen in my company, even in a fictional town. He’s the sort of soul who makes you want to rest in listening mode when he’s around. He already knows most of what I have to say, and most of what he has to teach, I need to learn.
Friends like him are a joy and a comfort, younger in years and wiser in spirit. I hope he is still around, near enough to wave a goodbye when I leave town without any luggage.
Walk in hope-
