New gardens residents arrived this past week. Above, Sequoiadendron giganteum (aka Giant Redwood). This ‘White Lightning’ cultivar grows about a foot a year. It won’t become a giant on my watch.
Below, Pinus virginiana (aka Virginia Pine). This ‘Wate’s Golden cultivar is just another scrubby pine in the summer, but in the bleak winter months, its needles will shine bright gold.
Above, a summer surprise to the gardener is this Sassafras albidum, the only Sassafras species native to North America. How it got rooted down among the stones in this wall is a mystery. Unplanned though it is, its intention will be honored. One day, it may be a tree sufficient to topple this wall, but the gardener will be toppled long before that happens.
