Strange how a memory you thought forgot can grab you and stir your times all out of sequence. A few days ago I stumbled over these photos above and suddenly it was Thanksgiving 2012 all over again. My first story had just been published in the UK by Alfie Dog fiction. The Main Muse was engaging a new ministry in our church. We were both feeling a bit overwhelmed, on the brink of something beyond our comfort, so we took our Thanksgiving holiday and hid out with our spiritual guide, Simon, for three days in a little cabin on the edge of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness near Caesar’s Head.

Our Landlord said ‘Foxfire’ was the highest permanent shelter in South Carolina, a claim I’ve never tried to verify, but it was high and away enough from current aggravations and distractions to give us a place to catch our breath and recollect ourselves as we anticipated deep change in our lives. I wrote a story there. Found Objects appeared in my short story collection. Dark on the Mountain, published three years later.

To recall all this now is especially poignant as we may be again on the brink of some deep change. This time, we don’t have to flee to the mountains to find our Yes to the future. We are already there.

Walk in hope-
