“How is your prayer life?” my friend asked me over breakfast. It wasn’t exactly the sort of question you expect to begin your day, but that is why I love my friend.
I savored a bite of my blueberry pancakes while I considered an answer, and I think my response was only modestly exaggerated. “These days, I feel I’m in prayer about half the time.”
No, I don’t talk to God half the time, but more and more I’m learning to listen. Prayer doesn’t begin when we bow our heads and intone “Our Father…” Prayer starts when Spirit talks to us in a voice we may not be expecting to hear. Everything I know to say to God takes about sixty seconds, But Spirit brings a new and startling Word to me every day.
To be caught up in prayer at times of God’s own choosing, we must train our minds to be listening whenever Spirit speaks. Even in the midst of all our doing and making, rushing and arranging, we need to hold aside a deep calm place within where we are welcoming a word too subtle to register in our outer ears. Everybody shouts at us but God, whose slightest whisper moves with the force of thunder. Be still and know.
Walk in hope-
