Here’s something you may (or may not) have heard of: Mom Lore and Dad Lore. That’s slang for the crazy stories that moms and dads (occasionally) share about the lives they led before they had kids. Usually these are tales about the wild times and carefree days of their own twenties, back when there weren’t so many screens or parents tracking who and where young adults were.
We’ve all heard the saying “compare and despair”, especially when it comes to twentysomethings comparing their lives to their friends’ lives on social media. What you may hear less about is how twentysomethings feel bad when they compare their lives to the ones their parents had—or to the ones they think they had—when they were in their twenties.
And it’s not always the fun they envy. The twentysomethings I talk to long to have the security—the friends, the partners, the jobs, the bank accounts—they perceive their parents had when they were young.
