For a few years I worked on a meditation book. I thought I could write a really good one, but I took too long putting it together. By the time it reached my editor at Chronicle Books, it was too late. She told me she loved it but the marketing team turned it down, saying there was already a glut of meditation books on the market.
But, my editor also told me that her whole team really wanted to work with me and, would I be open to some new book ideas from them? Well, gee, that made me feel pretty good and of course, I said yes. When they came back with the suggestion of a book about yoga and longevity I was thrilled.
I had been working with Dr. George Papanicolou from the UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA for a few years and he taught me a lot about longevity: what supports it, what prevents it, what causes premature aging. I knew that inflammaging was a factor and I knew how to avoid that. But I also knew there was much more to learn and I dug in eagerly.
Yoga is not the only thing that can help you feel good, stay strong, mobile, alert, nimble and healthy but it can do a lot to move those needles in the right direction. Movement is the #1 anti-aging intervention and if you blend that with yoga’s guidelines for balanced living, you will have a mind/body practice that supports you NOW and as you age.
It’s not just for old people. Every day we get one day older. The sooner you start doing yoga in a way that keeps your glucose steady, avoids adrenal fatigue, and balances your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the sooner you will live these benefits. You will feel more steady, confident, and positive all the time.
It’s all in the book. I hope you like it and that it brings you JOY!

Lifting the Gaze is an opportunity to withdraw from the demands of your life and gather yourself together within the beauty of Menla and the warmth of community.
Traditionally, a spiritual retreat is a time to touch your mind and touch your heart. It offers you a concentrated period of practice to help you get familiar with who you are, as you are, right now.
Personal practice is never about being better or different. It is not about rejecting any part of you, no part of your body and no part of your mind, your emotions, your anger or your love. It’s about opening to the basic goodness that lives inside you right now.
We will use the tried and true practices of yoga and meditation to experience the traditional benefits of joy and ease.
MORNING SESSIONS will include silent meditation, a dharma talk, Q & A and sustainable yoga practice.
AFTERNOON PRACTICES will include pranayama, restorative yoga, group discussions and outdoor walking meditation
ONE EVENING SESSION will offer a silent guided meditation.
During the retreat you will:
develop your mindfulness/shamatha practice,
strengthen your practice commitment by recognizing and relaxing your obstacles; and
gain the skills and awareness to bring your innate goodness into the rest of your life.
Together we will connect the dots between why we practice, how we practice, and the results of practice.
We will show up for ourselves and we will show up for each other…and we’ll make it fun!
All levels are welcome. Modifications will be offered to support those with injuries or physical limitations.
