Something a little different for y’all today.
I recorded a short(-ish) video, talking through the news about Trump’s new vaccine order. Consider it a kind of random thought out loud. I don’t plan to trade the long-form essays for this by any stretch. Those will stay. But every so often a story breaks and I want to react before it’s a week old and three thousand words deep, so I’m going to intersperse these shorter commentary videos whenever the moment calls for one.
Fair warning, though. The tech learning curve here is roughly vertical for me. If the lighting is off or I say “um” like it’s punctuation (and I do), bear with me while I figure this all out. The ideas will be sharper than the production values for a while, I can promise.
One quick update, since the news kept moving after I hit record yesterday. As of today, almost nothing has substantially changed on the ground. No new research came with the order, insurance coverage hasn’t moved, and several states have already said they’ll keep following the pediatricians’ (you know, the actual experts) schedule because it’s the one built on (you know, actual) evidence.
Trump also floated the idea of spacing a one-year-old’s shots across five separate appointments, which is five separate copays and five additional chances to miss one, in service of a problem that, frankly, doesn’t exist.
Credit where it's due, though. The most memorable part of the clown show wasn't the president, who appeared to briefly nod off mid-signing, or his row of nodding officials. It was the woman behind him, hand pressed to her stomach (and nodding), that the internet decided was working a hidden button to jolt him awake. Seven million views for "The Zapper" (I prefer Vaccine Vixen) so far. I have no commentary on her and no idea what she was doing there, but when your Gold Standard Science rollout gets upstaged by a rumored belly-mounted taser, as a marketing professional I’d say the branding may need a second look.
