My Older Child Didn’t Do This. Should I Worry?

One of the most common things parents say to me is:

“My first child never did this.”

The first baby slept differently. Ate differently. Talked earlier. Walked later. Loved strangers. Hated strangers. Lived on blueberries. Refused anything that was not beige.

Then the second child arrives and immediately ignores the family instruction manual. This is almost always completely normal.

Siblings share parents and a home, but they do not share the exact same temperament, genetics, birth experience, medical history, feeding pattern, sleep needs, sensory preferences, or developmental timeline. Your first child is not the control group for your second child.

Comparison can still be useful. Parents know their children well, and sometimes a difference helps them notice something worth evaluating. I pay more attention when a child is losing skills, showing significant weakness, struggling to eat or breathe, not growing well, appearing unusually disconnected, or missing several developmental milestones rather than doing one thing differently from an older sibling.

But a new behavior is not automatically a problem just because the first child did not do it. The first child may have walked at 11 months. The second may walk at 15 months. One may speak in paragraphs before age two. The other may be too busy climbing the furniture to discuss it.

Same family. Different child.

That is not always a warning sign.

Sometimes it is simply parenting’s way of making sure you never become too confident.
