So you dream of…Ischia!

Once, a friend asked me for recommendations for where to grab a meal in London for their 48-hr trip and I sent a massive list, to which they replied ‘wow thank you…lots of options’.

Whether that was a compliment or a critique, this wasn’t the first time I’ve felt a bit over the top after enthusiastically writing a novel via WhatsApp in response to quite a simple question. But I take my recommendations seriously – a good time must be had by all.

So….you’ve been dreaming of Ischia? Here’s everything I know – where to sleep, swim, shop, eat and drink.

Andy and I went to Ischia for the second leg of our honeymoon – we wanted a trip that was equal parts luxurious, equal parts relaxing. I’d always been interested in Ischia after reading My Brilliant Friend, and after stumbling across the Hotel Regina Isabella, and realising this was the hotel that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton had their affair during the filming of Cleopatra, I decided it was time to go to Ischia.

It’s a small island – nothing was more than a 20 minute drive away, 30 minutes if you’re really pushing it. We stayed in Lacco Ameno, a sleepy but very chic seaside town. Forio, a 10 minute drive away, was much more lively, but felt tourist-y in the sense that there were those tourist-y knick-knack shops open at 10pm – like a classically tourist Italian beach town.

If you want something a bit more lively, this might not be the place. Because we went for our honeymoon, our main goal was to relax, and relax we did. This isn’t to say it was boring, but because the island and its towns are so small, the pressure to ‘explore’ was not so extreme, which allowed us to indulge in staying in and around our hotel…which brings me to…
