There comes a time when a new friend, at some point after meeting Andy, will ask him with genuine curiosity, ‘Was it hard integrating into their family?’. ‘Their family’ being my family. I’m always a little shocked, but not really, as I’ve slowly come to the realisation that joining my family can be a bit of a vortex. We can whip each other into a frenzy, and I suppose we can be a bit intense to be around, given how we fight and make up between the four of us, sometimes ten times in ten minutes. Oops!
There’s this part in Calypso, one of my favorite books by David Sedaris, which captures so perfectly what it’s like being part of an incredible family:
