The next generation

Folks,

This last week, I had the privilege of speaking with Rep. Shomari Figures with students at Troy University about what our next governor can do to help the next generation of Alabamians. I’d like to take a moment to write to you about some of the issues those young students raised, some of the solutions we came to, and to ask for your support in getting the word out about our campaign to Alabama’s young people.

I promise you that, as your governor, I will fight every day to build a state our younger generation can afford to stay in. I will fight to make it possible for young parents to work by expanding childcare options and infrastructure. And I will fight to open doors to training, credentials, and careers by strengthening apprenticeship incentives and by creating paths like free community college for adults without credentials.

Alabama’s young people don’t want a handout. They want a fair shot. But our current government has been too busy enriching themselves, taking away voting rights, and playing culture wars to do what our young people actually need to build a good life here.

When it comes down to it, young Alabamians don’t care about the culture wars. They care about the fact that nearly one in five young people in our state can’t find a job that pays the bills. And what that has led to is an immense sense of political disengagement.

Over two-thirds of Alabamians say they don’t think their government cares what they think. And nowhere is that sense of disengagement more acute than in our young people.Turnout among 18- to 29-year-olds in Alabama is among the lowest in the country. If every young Alabamian turned out to vote, it would completely change Alabama politics, and we would win this election decisively.

So with just over two months left until Election Day, we have to get the word out about our campaign to Alabama’s young people. We have to show them what we are offering: a better Alabama, with jobs worth staying for, and the education, support, and training they need to get there.
