Many seniors I serve through Kin Domi are raving about how Tesla’s self-driving has given them newfound independence. They’re now confident driving on highways, taking long trips, and handling emergency night drives—something they wouldn’t have dared before. Seeing their joy and mobility improve is heartwarming.
But I can’t shake my concerns. Tesla’s self-driving is impressive, but it’s not foolproof. Engineers, take a well-deserved pat on the back—but also a deep breath. You wouldn’t want your grandparents or parents on the road with a potential safety risk.
I struggle to discourage them from using it because it genuinely enhances their lives. Instead, here’s some feedback I’m hearing from senior users that could make the experience safer and more user-friendly:
1️⃣ Reduce panic-inducing alerts. Sudden warnings make them anxious, sometimes leading to worse reactions. Can non-urgent alerts be delayed until they’re in a safer situation? Also, keeping messages visible longer would help.
2️⃣ Pre-drive self-check system. Some have had minor accidents and worry that sensors might be compromised. A clear checklist or self-diagnostic before engaging self-driving would be invaluable.
3️⃣ Better voice control. The touchscreen is hard to navigate for them—voice commands are their most intuitive interface. Making it more powerful would improve accessibility.
4️⃣ Senior-friendly training. Educational demos or tailored classes could help them understand self-driving better and use it more safely.
5️⃣ Vent feature is a hit! One senior specifically praised the Vent feature for reducing the odor of a new car. She worries that the strong odor could be a health hazard—this highlights the importance of air quality considerations for older users.
6️⃣ Senior-focused insurance and service options. One senior had minor incidents and had to keep driving with concerns because:
The wait time for service was too long.
She wasn’t sure if third-party services were qualified to assess safety.
She just needed assurance.
Could Tesla offer a special tier of insurance for seniors? If service centers are at capacity, could inspections be done remotely or automatically? Could there be clearer guidance on the best next steps for minor incidents?
Tesla engineers, your work is changing lives. Let’s make sure it’s doing so safely.
