Why I Chose a Plant-Based Lifestyle (And Why It Might Change Your Life Too)

When people visit Angel’s Animal Sanctuary, one of the first things they notice is that every animal has a unique personality.

The pigs greet us with excitement at breakfast.

The sheep seek out affection.

The goats are endlessly curious.

The chickens have favorite people.

The cows love scratches behind their ears.

The swim in the pond together.

It doesn’t take long before visitors stop seeing “farm animals” and start seeing individuals.

For me, that’s one of the biggest reasons I chose a plant-based lifestyle.

But it certainly isn’t the only one.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize that eating more plants isn’t just good for animals—it’s good for our health, our planet, and even our own sense of peace.

As someone with a background in veterinary pathology and human healthcare, I’ve always been fascinated by the body’s incredible ability to heal.

While no single diet is right for every person, diets centered around whole plant foods have been associated with many health benefits, including:

🥦 Better heart health

🥕 Lower cholesterol levels

🍓 Improved blood pressure

🫘 Better blood sugar control

🌱 Increased fiber intake

💪 Healthy weight management

🍇 Greater intake of antioxidants and phytonutrients

Plant-based diets also encourage eating more fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds—all foods that nourish our bodies naturally.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about making choices that help us feel our best.

Most of us would do anything for our dogs.

Many feel the same about their cats.

But what about pigs?

Or sheep?

Or cows?

Or chickens?

After spending time at the sanctuary, visitors often tell us something interesting.

“I never realized they were so smart.”

“I didn’t know chickens had personalities.”

“I had no idea pigs were so affectionate.”

The truth is...

The animals we traditionally think of as “livestock” experience joy, fear, curiosity, friendship, and love just like the animals we share our homes with.

Choosing more plant-based meals is one way many people choose to extend their compassion to all animals.

It isn’t about judgment.

It’s simply another way of aligning our actions with our values.

Eating more plants doesn’t just help animals.

It also helps the environment.

Livestock production requires enormous amounts of:

  • Land

  • Water

  • Feed

  • Energy

Plant-based meals generally require fewer natural resources and can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making them one of many ways individuals can lessen their environmental footprint.

Every small choice matters.

You don’t have to be perfect.

Even replacing one or two meals each week can make a meaningful difference over time.

Whether you call it karma...

Compassion...

Positive energy...

Or simply kindness...

I believe the choices we make shape the world around us.

When we choose foods that nourish our bodies while reducing suffering, we’re creating a ripple effect.

Every meal becomes an opportunity to practice kindness.

Not from guilt.

But from gratitude.

One misconception is that becoming more plant-based means giving up everything you love.

It doesn’t.

Start small.

Try:

🌱 Meatless Mondays

🌱 Swapping oat milk for dairy milk.

🌱 Choosing a veggie burger instead of beef occasionally.

🌱 Trying one new vegan recipe each week.

Progress is far more important than perfection.

At Angel’s Animal Sanctuary, we don’t expect everyone to become vegan.

Our goal is simply to inspire people to think differently.

To recognize that the pig asking for belly rubs...

The sheep following you around the pasture...

The curious goat climbing on a stump...

They’re all individuals deserving of kindness.

If our sanctuary inspires someone to eat one more plant-based meal each week, that’s a victory.

If it inspires someone to rescue an animal, volunteer, or simply become more compassionate, that’s even better.

If you’d like to support the incredible animals who call Angel’s Animal Sanctuary home, we have a fun way to help!
