House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries quietly met with Jared Kushner in NYC, Trump’s son-in-law and one of the most influential figures in his orbit, to “allegedly” discuss housing, immigration and the cost of living. Yeah right. Jared Kushner giving a shit cost of living? We weren’t born yesterday.
Kushner doesn’t hold a government job. He is not an elected official. He does, however, enjoy extraordinary political access while running a private investment firm backed by billions from Gulf states.
That matters because Democrats are asking voters to give them power specifically to serve as a check on Trump.
If Democrats win back the House and Senate, that mandate should not be interpreted as permission to immediately start searching for “common ground” with the same political movement they have spent years describing as corrupt, authoritarian and dangerous to democratic institutions.
The deeper problem with centrist Democratic leadership is not simply that it is too cautious. It is that it often treats accommodation with the far right as serious governance while treating demands from its own progressive base as unrealistic or disruptive.
That contradiction cannot hold forever.
If Trumpism is genuinely a threat to democracy, then it should be confronted as one, not normalized behind closed doors.
Use the power voters give you. Investigate abuses. Block destructive policies. Protect civil rights. Hold powerful people accountable.
Winning power means very little if your first instinct is to negotiate it away.
