After-school hunger is REAL. The minute my kids walk through the door, they are looking for a snack, and I’ve learned that having a few staples always on hand makes life so much easier. Pre-washed produce for quick snacks is key but the real win is having dinner ready to enjoy right when they get home. Otherwise everyone starts snacking leaving less time and room in the belly for dinner. I’ve been doing this for years and it’s really been my go-to hack. Feed them when they’re starving-they’ll be more likely to eat what you have for dinner, I promise!
But dinner aside, these are the things I never let myself run out of because they get us through breakfasts, snacks, smoothies, and those “I’m starving” moments all week long.
1. Bananas (aka we are banana monsters )
I always buy three bunches of bananas at a time because we go through them so quickly.
We use them for banana pancakes, banana boats with melted chocolate, smoothies (I freeze a ton for the week), peanut butter banana snacks, and açai bowls.
Honestly, bananas are probably one of the hardest-working foods in our house. They’re affordable, easy, and everyone actually eats them, which feels like a win.
2. Eggs + Egg Whites
Eggs are another non-negotiable staple around here. We go through SO many.
We make omelettes for breakfast, crêpes, egg sandwiches, and lots of egg white omelettes. I also love keeping containers of egg whites in the fridge because it makes adding extra protein so easy.
Between breakfasts and quick meals, eggs are always one of those things I make sure we have stocked.
3. Peanut Butter
We are a peanut butter-loving family over here.
We use it in smoothies, with fruit, on toast, in snacks, and honestly sometimes just straight off the spoon. It’s such an easy way to add flavor and a little extra protein to so many things.
A jar of peanut butter never lasts long in our house.
4. Chocolate Chips
This is one of those pantry staples that I always have because they make everything feel like a treat.
We add chocolate chips to yogurt, Ninja Creami “healthy” ice cream, chia pudding, snacks, and sometimes we just grab a few after a meal when we want something sweet.
I try to buy ones with a higher cocoa percentage because they’re a little less sugary, but let’s be honest… chocolate chips are still chocolate chips, and they make everything better. They are our special treat.
5. Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is another fridge must-have for us.
We use it to make our Ninja Creami creations, mix it with honey and granola for an easy snack, add chocolate chips for the kids, and I love stirring it into my chia pudding for extra protein.
It’s also become my go-to swap for some of the sweeter yogurts my kids used to be obsessed with. (Although I’ll still buy those as a special treat because balance!)
Greek yogurt is just such an easy way to sneak in more protein while still feeling like you’re eating something fun.
6. Almond Tortillas
These are ALWAYS in our fridge. They pack more protein than flour tortillas, are gluten free and the WHOLE family love them. Serve with eggs, make my famous tortilla crepes , make quesadillas (basically melt cheese between two pieces), or just char them on an open flame and eat them plain. These are so good any way you enojoy them!
Freezer Staples I Always Keep on Hand
My freezer is honestly my secret weapon for busy days. I always try to keep it stocked because having things ready to go makes last-minute meals so much easier.
I always keep egg roll wrappers and wonton wrappers in the freezer because they are perfect for repurposing leftovers. Leftover chicken, veggies, or meat can quickly become homemade egg rolls or lazy dumplings, and they are honestly one of our favorite meals.
I also always keep frozen meat and chicken on hand because I hate having to run to the grocery store every time I need dinner. Having proteins ready to go saves me so many last-minute trips.
My Ninja Creami tubs are another freezer must-have. I usually prep five or so at a time so we always have homemade “ice cream” ready whenever the craving hits. It’s such a fun treat to have waiting in the freezer. Buy the extra tubs-worth it!!
I also keep nuts neatly labeled in jars in the freezer so they don’t go rancid. Plus, I actually love eating them cold — they are so delicious straight from the freezer. We always have almonds, cashews, and Brazil nuts stocked for an easy snack.
And of course, we always have tons of frozen fruit for smoothies. I keep raspberries, strawberries, mango, açai, and plenty of bananas that I cut and freeze once a week. Smoothies are such an easy way to get in fruit, and having everything ready makes mornings so much smoother.
Of course, we always have tons of fresh fruits and vegetables stocked too (ideally pre-washed and ready to go), but these are the staples that I know will get us through busy mornings, after-school snacks, quick dinners, and those chaotic “everyone is hungry at the same time” moments.
Here are all Amazon our faves!
Back-to-school season is coming, and having a fridge, pantry, and freezer full of easy, nutritious options makes such a difference. These are the foods that keep our house running (and keep my little snack monsters happy!). Please comment and let me know some of your staples-genuinely curious what your house can’t live without.
Speaking of Greek yogurt…make these overnight oats. They are killer and are crazy easy to prep ahead for the week. I almost always have a chia pudding or overnight oat in my fridge throughout the week.
1 1/2 cups quick cooking rolled oats
2 tablespoons chia seed
