On July 25, 2026, Ukrainian long-range drones successfully hit a Russian missile boat accompanying cargo vessels transporting military supplies from Iran to support Russia’s war. Publicly, Iran and Russia condemned Ukraine’s attack and claimed the vessels were commercial and carried standard cargo. Secretly, Tehran then planned a massive retaliatory attack on Odesa, Ukraine’s principal port on the Black Sea. But Turkiye intervened, privately and clearly; then Iran backed down. This unreported intervention illustrated Turkiye’s influence and geopolitical cunning, which is ironic, considering that a Russian Czar once dubbed it “the sick man of Europe”. Today, it is a NATO member with the second-largest military, a democracy, and higher incomes than Russia’s.
