Maybe it’s the energy drop from traveling, over 10 hours of watching the skies smudge orange and rocky ledges turn back into swampland, because this has been a slow week for me.
I’m letting myself move through the day at my own pace, taking breaks for tofurky sandwiches, of which I’ve eaten a lot because they’re delicious, and sketching my next collage as the laundry tumbles.
This slowness also extends to the art I’m taking in. There’s lots of talk about overconsumption these days (as there should be) and deleting my socials has made finding and learning about new artists a more intentional process.
Perhaps this post can be that for you. Today, I’m sharing three artists that I’m super intrigued by:
With bras made of hair and poodles delicately holding plums, Finnish painter Riikka Sormunen is detail heavy and often funny in unexpected ways. What I especially like about her is the lush way she paints fabric. It makes me wonder how I can be more playful with pattern in my collages.
Szilveszter Mako for T Magazine Hungarian photographer Szilveszter Mako is a treat for the eyes. His Renaissance-inspired portraits of actors like Gwendoline Christie are instantly recognizable for their fun and freshness and always manage to stop me in my tracks.
Isabella Ducrot, Tenderness I, 2024 Italian painter Isabella Ducrot creates gentle embraces that feel as light and moving as the fabric she paints them on. The figures in her paintings seem to dance in their looseness and her patterns are playful without making your eyes cross.
