Small appliances have really come a long way over the past five or even ten years. Who says you can’t break the so-called design rules of living in a small space? Not Mara Greenwald, who painted her galley kitchen cabinets black — yes, black! — (Farrow & Ball’s Railings (No. 31), to be exact). It’s all about understanding what you’re working with. Because her uppers have glass fronts, and the area gets a ton of light, the black lowers read as dramatic and bold rather than closed-in or cramped. Bravo to her for taking a chance on a deep shade!
