Stop whining and start with that damn blue book

¡Versión en español más abajo!

I have always had one great frustration: playing a musical instrument.

I carry it around like a perpetual sense of guilt.

I should have started when I was a child.

I love music, and being able to play it would fascinate me.

Years thinking about it.

My wife has a school friend, Emi Rogel. They got back in touch a few years ago, and when my daughter María found out two years ago that Emi was a piano teacher, she asked us to let her take lessons with her. And she loves it.

After two years, she already plays quite well.

For the past two years, my chronic guilt over not playing an instrument has become sharper as I watch my daughter enjoying herself.

Until, at the age of 50 years and 5 months, I thought it was time to stop whining and complaining in the solitude of my inner self.

As simple as sending Emi a WhatsApp message and asking her to let me join my daughter’s lessons.

The first one was on April 8, 2026. It may sound stupid, but for me it is an important date.

I am passionate about it, learning almost from scratch. Learning the G scale and the F scale, playing simple pieces, improving month by month.

I have now been at it for three months, and I play Erik Satie’s Gnossienne No. 1 in a rough and out-of-time way —and occasionally out of tune. You probably would not recognize it at first, even if you know the melody.

Emi always tells me off about one thing: the damn blue book.

She told me to buy a piano technique book called My First Year of Piano.

It is a book for children, written exactly 30 years ago. It has illustrations of little animals playing the piano, such as crocodiles, puppies, and penguins.

Emi tells me I have to learn that book. It is the foundation of technique.

And I was not listening to her because I much prefer practicing melodies like "Moon River" or songs from Amélie.

Lesson after lesson, Emi gently tells me off for my stubbornness in refusing to face that children’s book.

In the end, having come to my senses and with the ambition of playing decently in two years, I am now working through the blue book. Today I reached page 15, where a Dalmatian is barking at a cat watching him, fur standing on end, from the top of a piano.

Perhaps you are wondering: why is Enrique telling me these domestic little episodes from his private life?

I am telling you because we all have something inside us that we would like to do, and we believe the chance to tackle it has already passed us by. And that hurts. Even if only a little.

If you have always wanted to do research, improve something in your work, play the electric guitar, start an innovative project, get involved in an NGO, launch a business, get in shape, or whatever it may be,

send a WhatsApp message and start with the damn blue book,

and stop whining.
