Wouldn’t it be grand if everyone took an interest in our ponderings and wonderings? Some people have the ability to make their stream of consciousness wildly entertaining. While many others either feel too nervous to share unfiltered perspectives with others or they do, but nobody really cares. Sort of like a low quality podcast that just seems like a bunch of dudes talking in circles.
I admit, I didn’t wish to write this article at all. I sought to create another encapsulated essay on a relevant yet misunderstood topic like I have before. But this time, I felt the pull of originality washing over my productive impulses. And I succumbed to feeling what was true over what was useful. Because when I felt the desire to fight writing an article that I could predict would be seen as ramblings and directionless verbiage, I also felt the scared child in my past cover their eyes in the corner of my soul.
My present, the all-consuming decision maker of always today, is used to taking the reins when a pause occurs in a conversation. It’s like a paranoid high schooler, wanting to engage authentically, but trapped in the maze of expectations. One wrong move can result in the obliteration of your reputation. One right move can land you in the graces of the popular clique. But I am defined no more by the fears of my childhood.
Instead, I’ve found the certainty I desired not within the arrogance of knowledge or the perfection of skill, but the constant reminder that my actions can only be powerful if I allow my honesty to run externally. Giving it the sunshine that it deserves. Giving it center stage to the play of mundane interactions alongside the most profound presentations of my worth to others.
This is what I found to be the most exciting topic to write about today. Not a current event, not a useful tip. But an example that you can see with your own eyes. Glistening in front of you is permission to share a cleaner mirror to what you do not know. It is relaxing to lean on the side of cluelessness instead of the side of white lies. It’s much like two buoys. One is large, but flat and wide, it barely is visible above the surface, but is stable and solid. The other is tall and slim. It pronounces its identity several feet above the surface for the world to see. But it is at the mercy of the waves, boats, even the seagulls. If you tried to step onto each one separately, which do you think will keep you more dry? The one barely visible, but sturdy as a glacier? Or the one in everyone’s attention, but foundationally precarious?
To speak from this place of stability without visibility, allows us all to relax in the comfort of our truth. To speak from a place of visibility without stability, allows fear and exposure to drive our decisions and attitudes. There is a clear answer here because I don’t wish to beat around the relative bush. Truth fuels our ability to connect with another. And we don’t need a book, thought piece, bias-identifier, anything that offloads the ability to discern what we know is true in our own core. Be the buoy that others can feel a deep resolution with. Not out of arrogance and superficial certainty, but out of humble acknowledgement and adaptive integration.
You are a beautiful work of bone and spirit, granted access to the deepest feelings of humanity. Do not forget the majesty inside your own eyes. Do not let go of your optimism. Embrace your stride in the light of day. There is so much joy to feel in the time to come. And you are worth every one of those moments.
